Commercial real estate developer and shopping center owner Kelly Doran says he has re-entered the industry after a hiatus with a new venture bearing his name: He has officially launched Doran Companies, a full service commercial development company with construction and property management divisions. It began operations June 1 out of offices in Bloomington.
Doran two years ago withdrew from a successful commercial development association with Edina-based Robert Muir Co. of Edina to run for the United State Senate, and later for governor of Minnesota. Both runs were unsuccessful, and now he has returned to commercial real estate fold.
Doran says his new company will include some of the properties he co-owned while heading up the Robert Muir Co. In addition, he says he has purchased Muir’s interest in the Muir-Doran Construction Co. and will assume its controlling interest, operating it under the name of Doran Construction.
Doran also says he will be active in all three entities and will “put particular emphasis on seeking development opportunities that could generate additional business for his construction and property management divisions.”
Doran’s new property management company will manage several shopping centers jointly owned by Doran and Robert Muir. Other jointly owned shopping centers will continue to be managed by the Robert Muir Co.
Doran says his new venture he won’t be limited to retail. “Given the current environment in commercial development, it probably makes sense to be more flexible and consider more mixed-use and infill opportunities,” Doran says.
